Little Boy Hugs and...

I'm hanging out at Seriously Write today. Well, really I'm enjoying time with my family but don't tell anybody. lol

No writing on the agenda for me today. No. Today's all about little boy hugs and skirting make-shift beds with an attitude of gratitude.

But, if you have a free moment or loneliness strikes, and you'd like some company, stop over and say hi > Seriously Write.

Wishing all my friends and family (those not here at our house) a blessed Thanksgiving!
Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.  ~ Psalm 100:4 NIV

Curl Up with this Holiday Romance...

“Do you believe in second chances, Chaney?” His voice rumbled near, tickling the bare skin on her neck.

Was he referring to them? Or to his skating career? The air compressed from her lungs, but somehow she managed to squeeze out a raspy, “Yeah.”

His gaze never left her face, but his fingers moved to toy with the ends of her hair. Sliding the strands through his fingertips, a tic tightened his jaw and his lips firmed into a straight line.

Of its own accord, her palm reached up to cover his cheek, his whiskers scratchy against her skin. It wouldn’t ease the pain or regret over his past choices, but perhaps she could offer small comfort now.

“Do you think we might have a second chance?” His lashes dipped to hide his expression from her. She almost missed the naked vulnerability, the loneliness.

“A second chance at…?” She held her breath, waiting, hoping he wasn’t referring to their Olympic dreams.

“Us.” His lips covered hers, gentle and tentative, soft and tender. When her hand curled around his neck and dragged him closer, he deepened the kiss and slid one arm around her waist while the other cupped her cheek, his thumb wreaking havoc with her pulse.

Oh, dear God in heaven, I love this man. What will I do if he leaves again?

What readers are saying about Christmas in the Rink:
"Tis the season for love, faith and joy and what better way to experience them than by reading this book!" ~ Sally Shupe

"...a marvelous novella that reminds us dreams may be set aside for a reason and forgiveness can heal hearts. A lovely story for the season!" ~ Julie Steele

“Washed up Olympic hopeful looking for part time mechanic's job.”
Not quite the glamorous life Conner Weddington envisioned during those countless hours of high school skating practices; but after his mother’s untimely death on Christmas Day, Conner joined the Army and left everything behind, including the father who despised his dreams, and his beautiful skate partner, Chaney Mitchum.

Chaney Mitchum understands why Conner left, but he stole her Olympic aspirations along with her heart. She's never matched that graceful rhythm with another partner, so with her dreams squelched and an adorable niece who requires her attention, Chaney fills her days with diapers and students, not pleasure skating or romance.

Now that Conner's back in town, will he reclaim the joy he once felt about Christmas and faith? Can Chaney and Conner rediscover their poetic elegance on the ice?

On My Kindle ~ Vegas Vacation by Clare Revell

Purchase Link
Sharing my review~
I always look forward to reading Clare Revell's latest romantic suspense, so I was thrilled to load Vegas Vacation on my kindle. Who wouldn't love reading about an English heiress who vacations in Vegas, becomes the target of an unknown assassin, and falls in love with a law enforcement hero? I was all over it.

Sgt. Martin Ames has just filed his retirement papers after an on-the-job incident robs him of his self esteem as well as other medical issues when the boss orders him to babysit spoiled Lady Tamlyn Bradshaw. Tamlyn's in Vegas vacationing, her first without her overprotective father, when her bodyguard ends up in the hospital with food poisoning. Personalities clash while Martin tries to protect her, which isn't easy. Tamlyn's used to having her way, but soon realizes that Martin's way is better, safer, and definitely more enjoyable. Tamlyn's attraction and encouragement is just what Martin needs to feel whole again.

Just 154 pages, I found myself wishing Vegas Vacation was a few pages longer, for the romance to blossom and old friendships (like Lia) to deepen as much as the action popped. Did I mention the action popped?? lol. Still, I wasn't disappointed especially with a twist I hadn't seen coming. While some events seemed a tad rushed, the intense action, budding romance, and a "relationship not religion" theme kept me turning pages. Definitely a book that'll be hard to put down!

Disclaimer: Sending a big thank you to the author for allowing me the privilege of reviewing Vegas Vacation and for the free copy I received in exchange for my fair and unbiased review. This opinion is my own, and I received no compensation.

Pinterest…Love it or leave it? By Dora Hiers

I’m about to let you in on a little secret.

I’m addicted to Pinterest. Shhh! Don’t tell anybody!

But how’s a person supposed to resist those delectable cookies and savory soups filling the screen? Or how about those comfy looking spaces that just cry out to a reader to curl up with a great book? And, oh, those delightful rustic cabins with the rocking chairs on the back decks overlooking mountains and sunsets and towering trees …imagine the inspiration for a writer! What’s a person to do?

Have you investigated Pinterest? What do you think? Do you agree with me?

If you have never visited Pinterest (really? How is that possible?), essentially Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board or scrapbook… a place to collect ideas. Maybe you enjoy collecting creative recipes for your culinary pleasure, scoping out the perfect vacation destination, or hunting down DIY instructions. Whatever your interests, you’ll find inspiration along with plenty of pictures there.

Just to give you a basic rundown, a “pin” is essentially a picture that bookmarks and references the original source. You can upload your own pictures, pin from websites or blogs, or “repin” other pins. A “board” is where you organize your pins.

Take a moment and pop over to my “bulletin board” and see what the rave is all about. While you're there, you might want to click the red "follow board" on some of the boards that excite you, but make sure you come back and let me know what you think, OK? :) http://www.pinterest.com/dorahiers/

With the holidays looming closer, I bet you can see how Pinterest might be a gold mine for ideas. Decorating, gifts, recipes…sheesh, I never buy cookbooks anymore. For the most part, I pin and print all my recipes, and then organize them in a binder. Did you see any recipes you couldn’t wait to try? Salivate over any desserts?

Some people unwind by watching TV. Others by scrolling Instagram pictures or Facebook statuses. Next to reading, browsing Pinterest is my favorite hobby.

What about you? Love it or leave it?
What’s your favorite hobby and why?

If you enjoy curling up in front of the fireplace with stories like this...

She gazed up at him, those luscious, forest-green eyes trusting, glowing with pleasure. Her spicy fruit and floral scent drifted up to him, and suddenly, he wanted nothing more than to kiss those strawberry red lips.

His arm tightened around her, and he tugged her up, bringing their torsos together so close that their breaths mingled and they became one form against the ice. Her eyes widened, and then her dark lashes rested against ivory cheeks.

Was she really inviting him to kiss her? But she didn’t know…didn’t know what he did for a living now. And shouldn’t he apologize first for stealing her dreams with his impetuous choice?

“I’m sorry, Chaney.” His voice came out husky, overflowing with broken dreams and pent-up longing. All he’d ever really wanted in life had been his faith, Chaney, and skating.

He had reconciled with God over the lost years. Had even picked up his skates again, and this time, no one could stop him from skating. But Chaney? He was probably the last person she wanted in her life right now.

Her lids flashed open, and her chest lifted with a sigh. Her hand floated up to cradle his cheek, her palm smooth against the rough smattering of whiskers. “It’s OK, Conner. You need to let it go. I have.”

“Have you? Really?”

That little gem is from Christmas in the Rink, a Christmas Extravaganza romance available on December 1st with Pelican Book Group

It’s bursting with family and laughter, sprinkled with grace and forgiveness, and weaved with reclaimed joy and rekindled faith. If you enjoy curling up in front of the fireplace with stories like this and you'd be willing to post an honest review at your favorite online hangouts, email me at Dora(at)DoraHiers(dot)com for a PDF copy. I only have a handful of review copies, so don't wait!

A fire. An old girlfriend. A new identity.

"Winter, since you saved our new house from burning to the ground, can we talk you into joining us for pizza?”

His new house?

Pizza?

Winter swallowed the giant clump in her throat. Tanner lived here now? In Promise Lake? Next door? How could this have happened without her knowing? Granted, she spent long hours on the job, and lately she’d been hanging out at the Henderson place. Apparently, she needed to pay more attention to the home front. A felon could have moved into her neighborhood and she wouldn’t have known.

Or worse.

Tanner Random could have moved in.

Police Officer Winter Evan and Navy SEAL Tanner Random are wrong for each other. Winter fears the water. Tanner skims through seas for a living. So four years ago, Winter convinced herself she’d be better off not worrying about his months at sea and his increased cajoling for physical intimacy.

But when she walked away, she lost a giant chunk of her heart.

Now Tanner’s back in town to care for his abandoned niece. No longer a SEAL, he’s sticking to the safety of the North Carolina mountains as a paramedic. Should Winter risk losing her heart all over again? Will God help them build what started years ago into something solid and secure? When love triumphs...

When Love Triumphs is part of the newly launched Pure Amore line, available by subscription with Pelican Book Group. Subscribe and receive a year's worth of pure romances for as low as $48.

On My Kindle ~ The Wishing Season by Denise Hunter

Purchase on Amazon
Sharing my review~
Chef PJ McKinley, the youngest of the McKinley clan, is out to prove to her loving family that she can take care of herself by winning the Wishing House, an ancestral home that's being awarded to a deserving business by a Chapel Springs philanthropist, and turning it into a thriving restaurant and B&B.

Cole Evans, a former foster kid who blames himself for the accident that stole his family, plans to win the house for Crossroads, a transitional home for foster kids who turn eighteen during high school and are forced onto the streets. When they present business plans to the eccentric philanthropist, she grants Cole the upstairs and PJ the bottom floor for the restaurant. Both are challenged to make their ventures work before the deadline.

I'm a huge fan of cute meets, and The Wishing Season doesn't disappoint, but I won't spoil it for you. And all those chance meetings at the front door or in the kitchen were charged with romantic tension. Just enough for me to keep turning pages.

"I can't stop thinking about you." Her breath hitched at the husky timbre of his voice. At the words. He advanced slowly, purposefully. His eyes, locked on hers, were filled with longing.

"Is that so?" Was that her breathy voice? She gripped the edge of the counter before she could do something stupid like pulling him into her arms and kissing his neck.
"Yeah, that's so."He stopped when he was close enough to make her body hum, and cradled her face in his hands. Then his lips were on hers. Not slow and lazy like last time, but deliberate, full of want. Finally.

What do you think? Would that keep you flipping pages past your bedtime? The Wishing Season wasn't all fun and fluff, though. Hunter balanced some heavy moments with some lighter ones, but she also offered spiritual nuggets to combat the lies that each character believed.

"If your heart's telling you you're not capable, it's lying. What's God telling you?"
PJ made a face. "Honestly? I haven't asked in a while. I've been too busy trying to make a success of myself."
Mom squeezed her hand. "Well, it's never too late. We all have thorns, you know."
"Thorns?"
"Those things that rise up around us, strangling us. Thorns don't keep a seed from sprouting, but they'll keep it from producing fruit."

Phew! How many of us have been there? I appreciate how everything wasn't wrapped up in a neat little package just because it's an inspirational romance. Overall, The Wishing Season was the perfect book to curl up with on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Actually, it'd be the perfect book to spend any afternoon. :)

You Want Me To Do What? by Dora Hiers

We’re outta here! With their bags packed and camels loaded, the Jewish remnant of Judah planned to flee to Egypt. They’d had enough.

Ishmael had just slaughtered Gedaliah, the king’s appointed governor, and filled an entire cistern with dead bodies. Not only did the remnant fear Ishmael’s return, but they also worried about the king’s reaction to Gedaliah’s murder. Not that they had killed him, but back then they didn’t have Twitter or Facebook to spread the word.

The survivors begged Jeremiah for a word from the Lord. What should they do? Where should they go?
“Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God…” ~Jeremiah 42:6 NIV

Jeremiah relayed the Lord’s instructions:   “Stay here in this land. If you do, I will bless you, and no one will harm you.” ~Jeremiah 42:10 TLB

Say what? You want us to stay? They’d just witnessed horrific killings, and the Lord was telling them to stay, that no one would harm them? Outraged, they accused Jeremiah of siding with the Babylonians and departed for Egypt ~ against the Lord’s wishes.

Ouch. Hadn’t they just said they’d obey whether the news was favorable or unfavorable? At first, their flagrant disobedience blew my mind, but the longer I dwelled on it, I realized that whether it’s disobedience or ungratefulness, He views all sin the same. When God reveals His path and it doesn’t line up with my plans, isn’t my reaction usually disbelief or displeasure rather than gratitude?

Case in point: my quest for an agent. My publisher doesn’t require an agent to submit, and since their contracts are fairly straightforward, I didn’t feel the need for one early on. Eleven books and four years later, I would welcome career guidance and appreciate help navigating the ever-evolving publishing industry. So after prayer and research, last year I submitted my Harmon Heritage series to two well-known CBA agents, and both declined representation. OK. So God obviously didn’t want me partnering with them, but I didn’t perceive their rejections as a STOP sign, rather as a YIELD. I kept praying about my writing journey. Feeling a definite nudge to venture into unknown territory, I wrote Roping the Cowboy, my first book targeted for the mainstream market, and queried two more agents who represent both markets. Again, two more rejections. This time, I pouted. Yes, I admit. I pouted, and it wasn’t a pretty sight.

“Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God…” and “Stay here in this land. If you do, I will bless you, and no one will harm you.” The first convicts me; the second confuses. If I'm praying for God to direct my path, shouldn't I be happy when He responds with either a RED or GREEN light? Sometimes I wonder if the nudge to write stories lacking a distinct faith element, but still sprinkled with grace and hope, was truly from Him. Or had I mistaken His voice for my own?

I’m being completely transparent for a couple reasons. Let me just put it out there. First, I confess that I still struggle with discerning God’s will for my life and my writing. I can't be the only one, right?

Secondly, if you're another writer, to encourage you that even published authors still receive rejections both from agents and publishers, and they still sting like a slap in the face. Not only that, but things start to wear a writer down. Lukewarm or negative reviews, no real down time because you're responding to emails and facebook posts or working on a galley when you're supposed to be on vacation, and the royalty statements that don't quite match the effort and time you've invested. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it, if I shouldn't just let it all go...

But it doesn't let go of me. Because when I hit that pothole of discouragement, God rains down blessings. It may be a sweet friend who listens to me rant over coffee, a glowing review, an invitation to present a workshop because of a referral, or just hearing about someone else's problems and realizing mine pale in comparison. Sometimes, He plants another idea in my head and characters who yearn for their story to be heard, their hurts to heal, who crave forgiveness or who long for a second chance at love. Other times, He grants me a stellar word count day with peace that overflows from my heart and spills onto the page.

So, I’m still tooling down the road until God plants a ROAD BLOCK in front of me.

What about you? Has the Lord revealed a different path recently than the one you expected to take? How did you respond?

The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty. ~Prov 22:3 NIV

You reign, Lord, in every aspect of my life. Take my hand and lead me where You’d have me go. Obliterate my fears and doubts. Fill my spirit with peace as only You can do. Amen.
