First Campaigner Challenge

And so it begins. Check out our first challenge in Rachael Harrie's Writers Platform-Building Campaign:

Write a short story/flash fiction story in 200 words or less, excluding the title. Begin the story with the words, “The door swung open” These four words will be included in the word count. If you want to give yourself an added challenge (optional), use the same beginning words and end with the words: "the door swung shut." (also included in the word count). For those who want an even greater challenge, make your story 200 words EXACTLY!

Yay! I did it in 200 words exactly! Here goes my first attempt at flash fiction...

The door swung open, the sweet scent of roses wafting into the quiet hallway. Scott scanned the room. Just like he left it.

“Oh, Scott. It’s beautiful.” Celina smiled up at him, love shimmering from her face. She’d changed out of her wedding gown and swirled her long hair up into a clip.

He couldn’t resist. He tugged at the clip and chestnut hair cascaded down her back in gentle waves.

“You’re beautiful, Celina.” Scott framed her cheeks with his hands, awe filling him that this long-awaited night had finally arrived. His lips met hers, at first light and teasing, tasting her sweetness, then deepening, growing anxious for more.

Her hands tightened around his back. A low moan escaped her throat.

Desire throbbed through his veins. He broke the kiss and pulled back reluctantly. “Let’s go inside. Are you ready?”

Her head bobbed. “Oh yeah.”

“That’s my love.” He scooped her up into his arms and nuzzled his lips against the creamy expanse of her neck. Her short breaths fanned his ear. Thank You, God, for helping us wait.

“I love you, Celina.” Scott carried her into the room and nudged the door with his shoe. The door swung shut.

This is the kind of Romance I loved to read...and which I hardly see around anymore! Great entry to the challenge.

Would like to invite you to take a look at the The Rule of Three Blogfest ---a month-long extravaganza in the fictional town of Renaissance this October, with some great prizes in terms of Author appearances. There would be comment love, of course, and some fab writing in a shared setting.

Would love to have some of your existing characters come play at Renaissance!

Hi Dora

I’m a fellow campaigner and for this challenge I have been given ten blogs to ‘judge’ and asked to short-list five. I'm not a big reader of romance, but your story is so beautifully and expertly written I’m putting it on the shorlist!
I have informed the powers that be.
Well done and good luck in the next round.

Thanks, Damyanti. I haven't seen too many romance lovers on the "challenge" trail. The number of entries is overwhelming, isn't it? I appreciate your kind words.

THE RULE OF THREE BLOGFEST? Sounds intriguing. I'll skip over there and check it out. Thanks for the invite!

AliB...I know how tough it is to read a genre you don't typically enjoy, so I appreciate your comments.

Thanks for selecting my entry to move forward! Yay!

Thanks, Nadja! I enjoyed the emotion packed in your 200 words as well. This has been quite fun. Not sure about the next one, though. I'll have to look up the definition of a haikus.
